• Three is absolutely a magic number when it comes to design, actually odd numbers in general. Grouping odd numbers of items forces the eye to move around the display, creating rhythm as well as visual interest.

• There is a misconception that black makes things look closed in and dreary however, this isn't quite true. I use it as an accent because it can actually enlarge the feeling of space by placing the darkest tone on an area you want to 'push back’ (creating depth). It’s also a beautiful timeless contrast against white.

• Curtains can make or break a room. One of the most important things to know in Interior Design is to NEVER have flooding curtains. It's not appealing, and it looks incomplete within the room. Another is to hang the curtains HIGH not low, this will draw the eye upward, creating height to the space giving the illusion of a larger room as well as a bit of drama. 

If a room lacks warmth and character, there's no better remedy than wood. While timber accessories and furniture are an easy way to lift a scheme and add texture, a 3D wall can really work wonders in a space without a defined focal point.

Rugs are the ultimate way to draw an interior design scheme together, however if you go too small the rug will look lost + your room will fall flat. Ideally, a rug should be big enough that some or all of your furniture’s feet can sit on it, for example if you use a tiny rug under a coffee table it will only make a room feel undersized.

This rule will help you create a color pallet for your space. 60% of the room should be a dominant color, 30% should be the secondary color or texture and the last 10% should be an accent.

• Before you commit to a wall color, it's important to paint a swatch and observe how the shade looks in different light conditions.

One of my favorite things to do to fill negative space is to use plants and books! Plants bring life into the room as well as a pop of color, while books create rhythm and can be used on pretty much any surface; coffee table, bookshelves, floating shelves, even in the kitchen! They make for great accessories too. However, some negative space is okay, you don't want to over crowd the space.

• White is the best option for a wall color in my opinion. It's fresh + airy and plays as the perfect back drop for any room, especially if you like to switch things up from time to time. Remember there's hundreds of different "whites" to choose from all white is not "stark" white. Find the one that works best for you.

• Transforming furniture is an interior designer's secret weapon. Spray paint or a can of paint will instantly have your old pieces of furniture looking better than before. Don't be afraid, just go for it!

• There's a few tips for renter's out there such as; peel + stick wallpaper, it will instantly update your space as well as add color, drama, texture, or depth to an area. You can also use peel + stick floor tiles to update your floor, or peel + stick backsplash to update your kitchen and bathrooms.
